Telemetry & Remote Data Communication: IoT Devices and Internet Gateways

Telemetry is what turns an isolated site into a managed one. Whether it is a metering skid offshore, a tank farm, or a production line, the pattern is the same: field devices produce data, a gateway moves it across the internet, and a cloud platform stores and displays it. ATAS designs and delivers this whole chain.

The device layer

IoT devices and sensor nodes sit closest to the process — reading levels, temperatures, vibration, energy, or polling existing instruments. We select hardware for the environment (power budget, ingress protection, hazardous area requirements) and configure each node with sensible sampling and reporting rates, because transmitting every value every second is rarely useful and never cheap.

The internet gateway

The gateway is the most important box in the system. It speaks the field protocols on one side (Modbus, OPC, serial) and the internet on the other (4G/LTE, LAN, or satellite where coverage demands it). We configure gateways with:

  • Store-and-forward buffering, so a dropped connection loses nothing — data backfills when the link returns.
  • Outbound-only, encrypted connections, so no inbound port to the site network is ever opened.
  • Edge logic where useful — totalising, deadbanding, and alarm detection at the gateway to cut bandwidth.

The cloud and the dashboard

On the cloud side, data lands in a time-series database and is served on a web-hosted dashboard: live values, trends, alarm notifications to phone or email, and exportable reports. Because the platform is web-based, management can check the site from anywhere — which is usually the moment the system pays for itself.

Designed for the awkward sites

Remote Malaysian sites bring real constraints: patchy coverage, limited power, and no IT staff on location. We design for those constraints rather than around them — proper antennas, watchdog restarts, and remote gateway management so a site visit is the exception, not the routine.

Have a site you wish you could see without driving there? Tell us about it — telemetry projects often start smaller than people expect.
